About

Reading Made Simple was developed by Vera Conway (Teaching Certificate prior to degrees) and Joanne Arrowsmith (B.Ed Early Years Specialism), mother and daughter, and belongs to Lilibette's Resources.
Both teachers have worked extensively with pupils with a range of ages and abilities,
teaching them to read and write with phonics.

Lilibette taught in mainstream education in KS1 for many years, with responsibility for overseeing phonics across the whole school (KS1 and KS2). She further home-educated her own children through to GCSE English, one of whom had special needs, and now works as a private reading and writing tutor to those with special needs, using Reading Made Simple.

Vera  has worked with both KS1 and KS2 children and young adults, and some learning EFL. In her work she devised many phonic games to help her pupils, which form the basis of the games we offer on RMS. She is the author of six books. They can be found here.
The purpose of this free programme of synthetic, systematic phonics is to enable pupils of all ages and abilities access to the printed word so that they can read The Book of Books, the Holy Scriptures, the Bible, in which are contained the truths about God, mankind, creation and eternity.

Its obvious use is for the instruction of young children who are just setting out on their academic journey, be this in school or at home. Teachers and parents around the world use it. Parents of schooled children find it helpful for helping children who have fallen behind at school. Home-educating parents find it helpful as a reading and writing curriculum. Special needs teachers use it to help those who need a slower pace. However it can also be used with good effect in the instruction of adults, be they those who had inadequate schooling, or those studying English as a foreign language (EFL/ESL).

It is important that users of Reading Made Simple are informed as to its growth for it may truly be said that it is growing, rather than having been written.
Thirty-five years ago, the authors realised the lack of a simple to use phonic course of phonic instruction with its own matching phonic reading books.  We made use of programmes such as Jolly Phonics and Letterland, but they, in those days did not have matching reading books. We used the best of the programmes available to devise our own teaching method, using the resources we had, but dreamed of having one that taught both reading and writing together, while taking account of the fact that reading progresses faster than spelling, with its own set of matching reading books  It was not until some twenty years later, when Joanne's family had grown and Vera had retired that we found time to put our thoughts on paper, and Reading Made Simple was born.

We now see, more than before, how important such a programme is. Although phonics is now taught in UK schools, the teaching is one-size-fits-all and robotic and many fall by the wayside. We find four-year-olds expected to learn terms such as 'phoneme' and 'digraph' which confuse the teachers and parents, let alone the children, putting an enormous stumbling block to learning in the way of many. Apart from that, the teachers are ill-taught, no longer understanding the subject, or how children learn: truly child-centered education has been forgotten in the quest for result-driven education.
More and more parents are taking on the task of instructing their own children to read and write, but the expense of suitable materials hinders them. The teaching of reading has literally become a 'science' and parents are made to feel inadequate to the job: but we are here to show you how to teach your child to read and write. It is not so difficult after all.

As we work with our pupils, using Reading Made Simple, we fine-tune it, re-write sections to improve them in the light of our findings, and continually add to the resources freely available so that we can truly say that it is being beaten into shape on the very anvil of actual use.

We are very grateful to our pupils and their parents who edit for us and give valuable feedback. Our pupils span a range of ages and abilities from no learning difficulties to severe. The programme, as it can be found here at present, provides a road map which can be used to teach any child, as long as the parent is ready to become a learner alongside their child and, above all, willing to learn patience and resourcefulness: the ability to see what is needed and to find a means of helping the child progress.

Reading Made Simple is dedicated "Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood." Revelation 1:5
