Level 1: |
The resources in this section of Reading Made simple have been borne out of my work with children with severe processing difficulties - children suspected of having profound dyslexia and other severe learning difficulties.
Reading Made Simple has all requisite ingredients of a dyslexia/special needs programme:
These resources contain the necessary repetition needed to help children to become as fluent readers and writers as they can be, as simply as possible.
Although these resources have been tried and tested on real pupils (aged to 12), always remember that first and foremost, Reading Made simple is a road map. The task of the teacher is as always to observe the child while working and to learn how to support the child to achieve the desired goal. This may mean using other strategies (which you can find on the internet, or make your own), while following the RMS progression. The reading books should however be read and the child prepared to read them through adequate study of each word list.

Level 1 Introductory Lessons: a, o, i, u and e
These short vowel activity packs each contain 2 reading books which precede Level 1 for those who have had difficulty building a sight vocabulary of the words decoded in Level 0. These phonic reading books only use vocabulary introduced in the basic red word box for the five vowel lessons.
They help to build a bank of known words on which reading fluency can be built.
If a child has/has not read the CVC and Consonant blends reading books and has not begun to build a bank of known words, then use these reading books first. They should only be used in conjunction with the FREE lesson packs in which they are contained to ensure that pupils gain the key phonic skills needed to move forward in reading. They should only be used in conjunction with the lesson indicated below each pack or they cannot be expected to help your child.

Level 1
Special Needs Systematic Reading Scheme
These books follow on from the first five vowel books, with new characters. The stories follow a 'historic' line, starting with Jack, living in his sick and mud hut, hunting for food in the woods. Invaders soon arrive and life gets exciting. They are suitable for older children who may find Tom too babyish.
These books are in part illustrated by the child for whom I originally wrote them.
Like the first five vowel reading sets, these books also mainly use the vocabulary on the Level 1 lists, with a few other words added which are gradually introduced and listed at the front of each book in which they are first introduced.
Used carefully they can help those who are really struggling to learn to read.
The series is not complete, but is offered here for those who might find the books helpful.
