These phonic readers will help to develop confidence in reading - the key stone for motivating the early reader.
Based on the experiences of young children, I have written these simple CVC reading books to be truly phonetic (i.e. totally decodable), unlike most 'phonic' readers, which throw in a lot of words that the child doesn't know and cannot decode.
They follow the order of sounds as taught in this programme.
These books build up gradually from just a few words to short paragraphs, revising already met words to build reading fluency the easy way!

How to make the CVC Phonic Readers
Please be sure to download the book first, or it will not print correctly.
This is very simple
The reading books are in colour, but if it is too expensive to print in colour, then just set your printer to print in black and white. The books are either 8 or 12 pages long. |
Level 0
CVC Phonic Readers
These CVC books should be read from left to right.
We introduce the vowels in the order: a, o, i, u, e.
The vocabulary is cumulative. Here you will find plenty to keep your young reader happy, and by the end of this section, the child should be beginning to recognise some high-frequency words, helping his/her reading to become quite fluent.
- The CVC readers only use the words: a/A, is, the, of.
- All of the other words are 3 letter, decodable words with a short vowel sound.
- The books are highly structured to support learners of all abilities - words are recycled throughout the series.
- Pictures make up for the lack of words, while not encouraging guessing.
- Each book tries to tell a simple story.
- Each book has been tested on children with severe special needs and those with none – all have loved them as they can read them!
- The books should be read in order as sight words and words from all five vowel families are gradually introduced, starting with those in the /a/ family.
- The CVC Phonic Workbooks have been written in conjunction with the CVC reading books to provide extra, valuable practice in reading and spelling.

For more confident learners, or for older children needing reading catch-up
Some children are confident at blending CVC words and can cope with more writing on a page, but have maybe not yet learnt to read fluently at this level. These may well be older pupils of 8 +.
The books below are for these children.
However, if a child is really struggling, then you might like to try our 100% systematic phonics programme, specially written for those with real difficulties learning to read.
