These phonics readers will help to develop confidence in reading - the key stone for motivating the early reader.
Based on the experiences of young children, I have written these simple readers to be truly phonetic (i.e decodable), unlike most 'phonics' readers, which tend to use a lot of words that the child doesn't know and cannot decode.
They follow the order of sounds as taught in this programme.
Matching worksheets can be found here.

How to make the Phonic Reading Books
This is very simple
Level 1 Introductory Lessons: a, o, i, u and e - for special needs only
These short vowel activity packs each contain 2 reading books which precede Level 1 for those who have had difficulty building a sight vocabulary of the words decoded in Level 0. These phonic reading books only use vocabulary introduced in the basic red word box for the five vowel lessons.
They help to build a bank of known words on which reading fluency can be built.
If a child has/has not read the CVC and Consonant blends reading books and has not begun to build a bank of known words, then use these reading books first. They should only be used in conjunction with the FREE lesson packs in which they are contained to ensure that pupils gain the key phonic skills needed to move forward in reading. They should only be used in conjunction with the lesson indicated below each pack or they cannot be expected to help your child.
These books must be read in order as vocabulary builds from one book to the next.

Here is a set of phonic reading books to accompany the Reading Made Simple Level 1 Phonic Programme.
Taught alongside the phonic lists, as provided here in Level 1, they form a complete phonetic reading scheme that can help all beginner readers including struggling readers to progress as quickly as possible.
These books start with 'ck' words, and the vocabulary builds up as the child learns to sound out new words as more and more sound families are learned.
Please see also our CVC readers and Consonant Blends reading books, which should be read before these books.
The focus is purely on phonics and decoding so that there are no nasty surprises of words a child does not have a strategy to read which can make a child guess and then become discouraged.
These phonic reading books introduce the basic letter patterns with two or three letters together making one sound.

- Each book builds on those before, by practicing CVC words, CVCC words and previously taught letter patterns as they progress through the Level 1 sounds.
- These books only use the odd words as introduced in Level 1.
- They do use words from the sound families already taught but that are not on the lists. These words can all be sounded out using the knowledge gained from studying the word family lists up until that point. These words are indicated within each book. Do help your child to see the sound family patterns in the words and help him/her to sound them out. Such words are kept to a minimum in the early reading books to help the child to develop confidence and fluency. In later books (from around 'ing' onwards) they help the child to slowly apply his/her developing phonic knowledge to a wider vocabulary. This in turn opens up the world of reading to the child.
- Some children may require books with words mainly from those on the lists and with fewer new words being introduced. These are labelled as part of the special needs series.
Set 1: ck to ar reading books
These early books aim to build up a bank of familiar words that the child can begin to remember without sounding them out every time. To this end there is often more than one book per sound.
They will help to build fluency, reading stamina and give confidence to the young reader.

Set 2: Powerful 'e' reading books
Set 3: ai to ou reading books
Choose at least one book for each sound. The more your child reads the better.
Set 5: ow onwards reading books
As we learn more sounds, your pupil will be able to begin to read simple books. Share the reading so that you help with any words that s/he cannot yet sound out, or to model how to sound out longer words.
Our monthly Nature Explorers nature magazine for early readers would provide plenty of stimulating material for your child to read, while learning about God's world.

Level 3 Reading Programme
On completion of Level 1 most children should move on to Level 3 for reading.
Our new Level 3 graded reader takes pupils on to learn less common sounds in more complex words, and widens the child's reading vocabulary in the true Reading Made Simple style, ensuring that the child does not meet a word for which the phonic knowledge to decode as not first been learnt.
Each sound is studied until the given words in the family are read fluently. A passage is then read as many times as needed until the child can read it fluently.
There is no time limit as to how long to spend learning each sound.
This full colour book can be purchased on Amazon.
