Longer short vowel words
These words have more than one syllable and can be broken up by chunking them
Teach your pupil to locate the first vowel and to break as soon after it as possible. For some words, this will straight after the vowel, as in ca-mel and ex-pect.
For other words you will have to add the consonant after the vowel, e.g. e-las-tic.
The final vowel of a word will always come with the final consonant when present.
Do not worry if your pupil still finds these words hard after this lesson - there is plenty more practice in the next level - it is merely an introduction to the idea of words being able to be broken up into syllables.

Frank was sitting at home reading the newspaper. He read a story about a man who was walking along by the canal when he was attacked by a robber with an umbrella. The victim was very upset and told the police. The police found an umbrella that they knew belonged to the robber. Then they found the man himself. The victim paid compliments to the police for finding him so quickly.
The people of the town were disgusted that such a thing should happen in their district. They began to be distrustful of the canal path. The police held a public meeting to discuss the safety of the path. Now there are plenty of lights along by the canal.
