Final ar (er)
In some words, the final 'ar' is pronounced 'er'. It is worth studying these words to avoid confusion.
In all these words, say 'er' when you see the final 'ar'. Don't forget!
Help the pupil to chunk words where necessary. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. They often come after the vowel sound. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)

Dictation:
While Pam was out in the garden one day, she spotted a tiny mysterious creature crawling along a leaf. Pam likes nature so she went to investigate and found that it was a caterpillar. She watched its behaviour. It seemed to hold onto the stalk with its back legs and walk by making loops. She looked around the area to see if she could find any more, but she couldn't. She was not very familiar with caterpillars as she had not seen many before. She took a photograph of it and when the picture was on the computer screen she
compared it with other pictures to see if she could identify it. Her mother thought it was a brilliant idea.
