ough
This is one of the trickiest sounds to learn as it actually makes six different sounds. Study them carefully, but memory is required to remember which words have 'ough' in them. Reading this list often will help familiarity grow. Make it a daily exercise for a while.
Help the pupil to chunk words where necessary. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. They often come after the vowel sound. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)

Dictation:
The next morning, Tom woke with a cough. "I know it is tough," said his wife, "but you must rest today."
"Can you phone Bill for me then, please," said Tom, "as I must have someone to check the lambs. They might be in danger. Ask him to come to the yard and whistle. Jiff, the sheep dog will go with him up to the top field."
Bill arrived, though a little late as he was having breakfast when he received the call. Although it was still cold, the sun was shining. Bill thoroughly enjoyed helping Tom.
Teaching notes:
Help your pupil to set out the speech properly. Always start a new line for each new person speaking. Watch the commas particularly.
Talk about lambing time. Find out as much as you can about it.
Help your pupil to hear the break of paragraph. The first paragraph is Tom's conversation with his wife. The second tells us what happened when Bill arrived.
