ous
It is hard to describe this ending sound: Say it and listen and you will hear. It's not quite 'us', more like 'ers', but all these words have it! It is an ending sound.
Help the pupil to chunk words where necessary. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. They often come after the vowel sound. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)

Dictation:
Sam enjoys reading. Yesterday he was reading a story about an adventurous man who went on a dangerous journey to India. Out in the wild, he met with an enormous elephant. The situation became serious and the man nearly came to a disastrous end, but was helped by a mysterious stranger who came to his rescue. Sam thoroughly enjoyed the story and thought Pam would like to read it too. Pam didn't fancy the story as although she likes geography she prefers true stories about famous people.
Teaching tips:
Find out where India is on a map.
Find out about elephants in the wild.
Check that the pupil can write these words before starting the dictation:
rescue (powerful u-e)
fancy (soft 'c')
prefers ('er' family)
