Soft c
We have already learnt words in this family in Levels 1 and 2.
Due to the fact most of our letters date back to the Romans, we have inherited their rule of making 'c' sound hard in front of the vowels a, o and u, but soft (like 's') before the vowels e, i and y.
Help the pupil to chunk words where necessary. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. They often come after the vowel sound. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)
Soft 'c' sounds like the letter sound 's'.
It is quite normal for pupils to try and turn every 'c' into a soft c, after this lessons has been taught. As before, gently remind of the rules and that everything learned so far uses hard 'c'.
Explain:
When 'c' is next to 'a', 'o', or 'u' it is hard like 'k'.

Explain:
When 'c' is next to 'a', 'o', or 'u' it is hard like 'k'.
BUT:
- When powerful 'e' gets near to 'c', it changes 'c' to say 's'. So when you see the letters 'ce' together, they always say 's'. The 'e' is silent.
- The letters 'i' and 'y' can also act like powerful 'e' and change 'c' to 's', as in the words city and icy.

Dictation:
One cold December there was a lot of ice on the road. Tom did not fancy going out but he had to go to a city in France for a meeting in an office. He rose early and packed his bag with a pencil and pad. He looked at a map to find the place where he had to go. He needed to get to St. Pancras station in London to catch the train to take him under the English channel. He could not take his bicycle as it was too icy, so he took the bus. Looking out of the bus window he saw the police attending to a crash.
Teaching notes:
Discuss 'too' icy. Give other examples: too big, too small etc...
Can your pupil remember how to spell find and cold? They both have vowels saying their name. you have to speak posh!
Talk about St. Pancras station and how to spell it before doing the dictation. Can you find it on a map?
