Having laid a good basic foundation of phonic knowledge, which hopefully you are now seeing your pupil use in both reading and spelling, we move on to teach some more useful sounds. You might find that having been pointed in the right direction towards reading and spelling, your pupil is beginning to see patterns for him/herself and 'pick up' spellings independently. But we don't want to leave this to chance and for pupils to know some things and not others, so it is as well to continue in a systematic way to complete the task of learning to read and spell, thoroughly.
tion
There are many 'tion' words. We give here just a few that may be relevant to a younger person.
Rule: 'ti' says 'sh'
In theory we should say 'shon' as an ending for these words, but we tend to say more of a 'shun' sound.
Help the pupil to chunk each word. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)
In some of these words there is a long vowel (saying its name not its sound):
sta tion (the 'a' is saying its name not its sound)
in vi ta tion (again )
con ver sa tion
in for ma tion

Dictation for Friday
Mum had a conversation with her brother. Pam and Sam have had an invitation to go to London Zoo with him. They will go on the train. They must be at the station by nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Dad will find out the directions. Sam has lots of questions about the trip. "What will we see?" he asks.
Dad tells him to look on the computer to find out the information he wants. Sam looks and says:
"There are lots of animals, but I hope to see the monkeys, tigers and lions. Plus, they have the new addition of a camel with two humps."
Jake was standing on the station when he overheard a conversation. The tall man in question was ringing a man called Steve and giving him an invitation to join him somewhere, but Steve did not seem very happy about it. The tall man was giving directions, but the other person kept asking for more information. The tall man soon began to shout. Jake did not like the look of the man, and in addition he did not like the fact that the man sat next to him on the train.
Teaching notes:
Talk about the need for both London and Zoo to start with a capital letter as they are a name. All names begin with a capital letter.

The United States is a nation. (United has a long vowel 'u' - tell this to your pupil)
Addition is easy.
We will not take any action this time.
