a long 'oo' sound. Of course we have met this sound already with 'u-e', ew and 'u' saying its name.
Or, the 'u' is silent
Or 'ui' makes a 'wi' sound.
Help the pupil to chunk words where necessary. Say the word and listen for the natural breaks. They often come after the vowel sound. Remember - each chunk of a word must contain a vowel - or a vowel sound (in the case for example of words with 'y' making a vowel sound.)
As the holiday destination was near the sea, Paul decided to treat himself to a cruise around the bay. As he reached the seafront, there was a man playing his guitar, but apart from that, there were none of the usual summer attractions. The pamphlet said that the boat would make a circuit of the bay and that it would take about an hour. Paul boarded the boat and made himself comfortable, facing the front. The sun was shining as they set off. Paul was glad of the boat guide’s commentary, as he learned from him the history of the area. A few large waves made his stomach churn, so he nibbled on a biscuit that he had put in his pocket for this purpose. The scenery was indeed beautiful. Paul took many photos and sent some of the pictures to his aunt in France.
