ea (e)
We have already met 'ea' saying 'ee', now we meet an alternative pronunciation, where instead of saying ee as in seat, ea says 'e'. For these cards with two sounds but the same letters, we don't make another flashcard, but rather make both sounds when we get to that card. So for 'ea', from now on teach your child to say 'ee' and 'eh' for the 'ea' flashcard.
After explaining that 'ea' sometimes says 'ee' but also sometimes says 'eh' let your student try these words. Gently remind him/her if s/he forgets - or let him/her try 'ee' and see if it makes sense first - it might! Then try 'eh'.
By regularly reviewing the word lists already taught, children begin to learn which words belong with each family. Take time to review the 'ea' saying 'ee' words. Can your pupil give you five words from each list?
When reading a word with a sound that can be said in two ways, trial and error is sometimes needed at first until the word is recognised.
Please do not be surprised if your pupil takes a while to grasp this new sound. spend one week and cover the lesson thoroughly stressing the need for /ea/ to make the /e/ sound in these words, but keep moving forward. Be ready to remind your pupil of the need for these words to be spelled with /ea/.
