Long Vowels
Now it is time for something a little different. Do not make a flashcard as it is not necessary.
We have learnt that some word have a powerful 'e on the end which changes the vowel to say its name instead of its sound. However, in some words the vowel says it's name without help from any other letter/s. Typical English to complicate things!
Study these three groups of words. If your pupil tries to say a short vowel sound, remind him/her to try a long one: ay, ee, eye, oh, you.
This might be a good time to revise the vowels and their short and long sounds as although your pupil is very familiar with them, children often have a wobble as this new idea is processed.
Note: for reading purposes, as for when we learnt /ly/ (as we will not do this for spelling until Level 2);
We say one baby, lots of babies
Only show your child this if s/he is able to read the words in the green box.

Odd Words for reading and spelling: None
Dictation: Revise /o/ saying /u/:
His sister is glad Tom has come at last. She loves her brother very much. Tom will go home on Monday. Then her mother will come from London to stay with her.
Teaching Notes:
· This group of words needs no special help to change the vowel to say its name, therefore it can cause confusion. Tell your pupil that this is a special set of words. The fact that these words do not need help to change the vowel to say its name does not mean that anything they have been taught to so far is going to change. Those words will need the rules that have been taught. However, this is easier said than done, so expect some pupils to have a ‘wobble’ and try to change things of which they seemed secure prior to this lesson. Gently help the child to apply the necessary rules until this lesson is sorted in the child’s mind. Do rest assured that this will take some weeks, but you can move on, being ready to support your child as s/he meets these words in his/her reading and/or writing.
· Note the comma to separate thought from thinker.
· Remind pupil of capital letters for months of the year.
