le endings for Reading Only
Rules:
If there are two consonants before the 'le' ending, then the vowel is short, saying its sound.
little - i
If there is only one consonant between the vowel and the 'le' ending, then the vowel is long, saying its name.
table - ay
Help your pupil to study these words. We will not attempt to spell them at this stage.
Teaching Notes:
· Tell your pupil that ‘le’ simply says /l/ at the end of words.
· Note that we have a number of words with double letters - for the same reason they are doubled in families such a /er/ - to keep the vowel saying its sound. Therefore the pupil should know not to make the vowel say its name. Contrast these words with able, table and Bible, where there are no double letters. Here, the vowel DOES say its name.
· It is important to show your child the above point, as it further reinforces the important role played by any letters that can act like Powerful ‘e’. This concept is met time and time again.
