y (eye)
This is another fairly easy sound to learn that does not normally cause too much difficulty.
We have already met by and my to read, so we are half way there already!
Do not make a flashcard for this one either. Children usually pick up 'y' saying 'eye' quite quickly.
When you show the -y flashcard, the child should now say /ee/ and /eye/.
Note: Just as with words ending with 'y saying ee', to make a word plural, we take off the 'y' to add 'ies'. We will not learn this for spelling until Level 2 but practice reading these words, if your child is able to read the words in the green box.
Teaching Notes:
· Help the child to add /ing/ to cry, fly and dry.
· This is the first time we have used the word me in a dictation so just check that your child can remember how it is spelt before doing the dictation.
· Note for reading how the ‘y’ is replaced with ‘ies’, as for ‘y’ saying /ee/. Practice such words.
· Liken why to when, where and who. The pupil should be familiar with /wh/ now.
· Remind that we separate thoughts from who thought them with a comma.
· Assess past lessons and check particularly for these words: September; very; kind.
